Getting the Dirt on Landscaping With Plants
Landscaping is a great way to increase the enjoyment of using your yard. And if you are ever in the market to sell, landscaping is an inexpensive and effective way of significantly increasing your homes curb side appeal and asking price.
Plan before you start - Always have a plan before you pull out your shovel or your wallet. A well thought out plan will save you many hours and dollars.
Know your zone - The best way to select a plant that will thrive in your garden is to know your climate zone. If you are unsure then take a trip down to your local nursery or garden supply centre and get some excellent advice for what plants will be right for your zone.
Consider sun exposure - Some plants need lots of exposure while others prefer ample shade. Watch the progression of the suns rays across your yard and get a sense of where the different zones of light are in your yard, then plan accordingly.
Purchase hardy plants that require low maintenance - It's ok to have a few fussier plants with interesting characteristics, but you don't want a whole yard full of plants that will wither at the first sign of neglect or bad weather.
Look for healthy foliage and roots - Avoid plants that are root bound or have damaged stems and leaves. A healthy plant is much more likely to take a strong hold in your garden.
Don't get too focused on flowers - Often blooms will only be present for a week or two. Leaf colors and textures can provide a surprising array of visual appeal to your yard that will last year round.
Consider the mature size of what you are planting - What might start off as a delightful small shrub could soon push over your fence if planted too closely. Its important to consider how tall and wide each variety is likely to become before you decide upon location.
Dont plant too close to the house - A small tree might be a beautiful accent piece by the north east corner, but overhanging branches may clog gutters with leaves and provide access points for squirrels and rodents into your home.
Think twice before planting ivy or bamboo - Plants such as these can look attractive, but their tendency is towards aggressive growth.
Ultimately landscaping can be a very rewarding process and a good way to get some fresh air and exercise! Approach it with a sense of fun and adventure, and be sure to talk to friends, neighbours and the good folks at your local nursery for ideas and inspiration. You'll be surprised at what you can accomplish!
